Vol. 392 No. 8

Written Answers. - Prosecutions of Unlicensed Hauliers.

133.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the number of prosecutions which have been taken against unlicensed hauliers in the years (a) 1987, (b) 1988 and (c) to date in 1989.

The licensing of goods and passenger transport operations is governed by the Road Transport Acts, 1933-1986, and enforced by transport officers of this Department and the Garda Síochána.

The number of prosecutions initiated by the Department of Tourism and Transport in respect of unlicensed haulage, i.e., failure to hold a valid road haulage merchandise or carrier's licence were as follows: 1987, 23; 1988, 37; 1989 to date, 19.

Information on proceedings for similar offences initiated by the Garda authorities is not available because of the manner and format in which their statistics on Road Transport Acts' offences are maintained and categorised.
