Vol. 392 No. 8

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

20.

(Carlow-Kilkenny) asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he has any plans to allow single people to have a companion travel free with them as is allowed to married people on disabled persons maintenance allowance.

The free travel scheme applies to residents of the State aged 66 years or over and to certain categories of disabled persons under 66 years including those in receipt of a disabled person's maintenance allowance (DPMA) from a health board. The scheme also applies to spouses under age 66 for journeys on which they accompany the qualified person.

To widen the scope of the free travel scheme to include persons other than spouses travelling with recipients would have significant cost implications and would have to be considered in a budgetary context.
