Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Paid Educational Leave.

140.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will outline the terms of the ILO convention on paid educational leave; and the extent to which it is applied in Ireland.

ILO Convention No. 140 concerning paid educational leave was laid before both Houses of the Oireachtas on 26 July 1978 and copies are available in the Oireachtas Library.

Ireland has not ratified the Convention concerned. The position is that arrangements for paid educational leave are not subject to statutory regulation and are negotiated as part of the free collective bargaining process. As the Deputy will be aware, comprehensive arrangements for the granting of paid educational leave operate in the public service and similar arrangements exist in many areas of private employment.
