Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - FÁS Statistics.

143.

asked the Minister for Labour the number of persons at present employed by FÁS; the number of training centres in each county; their location; and the number of individuals employed in each of the locations.

The total number of permanent staff employed at present by FÁS is 1,976 and the number of training centres is 20.

The location of training centres and the deployment of staff is a day to day matter for FÁS and the Deputy should contact FÁS direct in the matter.

144.

asked the Minister for Labour the total cost to the Exchequer of funding FÁS this year; and the cost each year since the establishment of FÁS.

The Exchequer capital and non-capital allocation for FÁS in 1989 as published in the Estimates for Public Services 1989 is £104.794 million; the Exchequer outturn for 1988, its first year of operation was £113.113 million.

145.

asked the Minister for Labour the records which are kept by his Department or/and by FÁS as to the number of individuals who undertake a FÁS course who obtain (a) permanent employment and (b) temporary employment after completing the course; the figures, if any, which are available for each of the years since the establishment of FÁS to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Since the establishment of FÁS on 1 January 1988, the placement rate within six months of completion of training is approximately 70 per cent on main line training courses, such as specific employable skills. Data on job placements are not disaggregated by permanent and temporary employment.

Training programmes whose objectives are mainly of a social nature would not have as high a placement rate.
