Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

183.

asked the Minister for the Environment when he intends to make an announcement about the provision of bathrooms for the houses at Cathal Brugha Place, Dungarvan, County Waterford.

217.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of local authority houses in the country without (i) bathrooms and (ii) indoor toilet facilities; and the measures he intends to take to rectify the situation.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 183 and 217 together.

While the maintenance and management of their dwellings, including improvements such as the provision of bathrooms and toilet facilities, are the responsibility of local authorities, financial assistance is available in certain cases under the Department's remedial and improvement works schemes.

A revised proposal under the remedial works scheme for the complete refurbishment of houses at Cathal Brugha Place has recently been received and is being examined. If the proposal is found to come within the scope of the scheme, the question of funding will be considered in the light of the capital available for 1990 and the competing demands by other authorities.

Information supplied by authorities indicates that at 31 December 1987, the numbers of their houses/flats lacking bathrooms and indoor toilet facilities were 8,642 and 2,493 respectively.
