Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Realignment of N4.

209.

asked the Minister for the Environment the present position regarding the proposed realignment of the N4 at Laraghbryan, Maynooth, County Kildare; if it is intended to proceed with these works in the current year or in 1990; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that at least three fatal accidents have occurred on this section of roadway since the commencement of improvement works; if financial provision is being made for this work in the context of the 1990 Estimates; when work will be finalised; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Improvements to the national road at Laraghbryan are being carried out in two phases. Phase I has been completed at a cost of £804,000. A revised design for the second phase, costing an estimated £500,000, has been approved by the Department.

It was not possible to allocate a grant for 1989 for the second phase because of competing demands for other important road improvement schemes. The question of a grant will be reconsidered when the road grant allocations for 1990 are being determined.

At this stage, it is not possible to give an indication of the likely timing of the construction of the scheme.
