Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Second Level Teaching Year.

347.

asked the Minister for Education if, after account is taken of the time devoted to public examinations, the second level teaching year in Ireland at 164 days is substantially shorter than in any of the following countries: (a) Belgium (b) Denmark (c) West Germany (d) England (e) France (f) Italy (g) Luxembourg (h) the United States (i) the Netherlands and (j) Japan; and if this has any positive or adverse effect on the quality of Irish education.

In Ireland second level schools may take credit for 12 public examination days towards the 180 days on which they are required to be in operation in the school year. From the information available to me, it would appear that the teaching year in Ireland is shorter than is the case for the countries mentioned. I am satisfied that the quality of education in Ireland stands comparison with that in other countries.
