Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Entry age to Higher Education.

363.

asked the Minister for Education if she agrees with the opinion expressed in Paragraph 5.7 of The Programme for Action in Education by her predecessor, that many pupils are too young and too immature after five years in post-primary education for entry to higher education.

The degree of maturity achieved by pupils after five years in post-primary education can vary significantly. At post-primary level there are many options available to students to lengthen the school cycle. These are: (a) V.P.T.P., (b) Transition Year, (c) Repeat of a particular year within the guidelines or (d) Repeat of leaving certificate examination.
