Vol. 393 No. 1

Written Answers. - Gifted Children's Education.

366.

asked the Minister for Education if any special provisions have been made in regard to the particular position of gifted children in our educational system.

The general principles of the primary school curriculum provide for the recognition of individual differences, and the provision of suitable learning experiences for children with special talents. In this connection my Department maintain liaison with An Óige Treithreach (the Association for Gifted Children), and in recent years the colleges of Education have taken a particular interest in this group, and weekend courses have been organised on an experimental basis in computer programmes for selected pupils. My Department's circular 16/73 on the responsibilities and duties of principal teachers and teachers in charge of national schools sets out that the principal teacher should ensure that additional opportunities and facilities are available to allow the most gifted pupils to make the fullest use of their natural abilities.
