Vol. 393 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Galway School Transport Services.

190.

asked the Minister for Education the reason she has withdrawn school transport services in the case of pupils from the Creggs area of County Galway attending second level schools in Roscommon town; and if she will restore the service to what existed before 1 September in order that discussions to resolve this problem may proceed without prejudice.

The Deputy is understood to be referring to an irregular practice which had developed some years ago whereby post-primary pupils for the Creggs area of County Galway seeking school transport to Roscommon town had been picked up by the school transport service in the Ballygar catchment area. The practice is in course of being phased out, and it is not open to my Department to restore service. I allowed transport from within the Ballygar catchment area to continue to the end of the summer school term 1989 for all children from the Creggs and Four Roads area attending schools in Roscommon. It was emphasised that this agreement would not continue beyond the end of June 1989.

Creggs is situated in the Ballygar catchment area and under the terms of the post-primary transport scheme pupils from that catchment area wishing to attend school in Roscommon town must make their own way to the Roscommon town catchment area boundary in order to avail of the transport to that centre. I should add that their accommodation is subject to availability of seating and the proviso that no extra cost to the State will arise.
