Vol. 393 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Barrack Closures.

25.

asked the Minister for Defence the army barracks which have been closed or are scheduled to be closed this year; his further plans for closures; and the reason for same.

Fort Camden, Cross haven, County Cork, was closed an handed over to Cork County Council on 29 May 1989. The post was surplus to military requirements. There will be no further closures of barracks or posts this year.

The question of further closures of posts is the subject of examination in my Department. It has been decided to dispose of Collins Barracks, Dublin, but its closure will depend on the relocation of the military units at present located there.

In view of the historical importance of Collins Barracks, does the Minister propose to give its name to any other barracks? A failure to do so would be reneging on our history

Future development will always be subject to planning permission but its history and aesthetic aspects will be taken into consideration. However, I do not want to have military personnel spread over too many barracks, leading to much higher overheads and maintenance which is wasteful of military personnel. We should aim towards a more mobile Army, Navy and Air Corps and supply them with the best modern equipment. In the Estimate for next year there is a substantial extra amount provided for transport. It is more important to put money into equipment instead of buildings.

Does Griffith Barracks figure in plans for future closure?

They are all being examined at the moment but we have only come to a firm decision regarding Collins Barracks, Dublin. A few other decisions have been made but they will all be looked at in the light of having a mobile, efficient Army which can move from place to place. They need to be highly mechanised to deal with problems quickly at short notice.

The Minister stated that there would not be any more closures in 1989. Does that refer to the financial or the calendar year?

As I said, the only firm decision has been in relation to Collins Barracks, Dublin, but every barracks in the country is being looked at. We are seeking to establish their overall military efficiency as far as the State is concerned. However, as I said, no decision has been made in regard to other barracks.

Is Connolly Barracks, Longford, under review at present?

Every barracks will be examined but we have not come to any conclusion yet.

While it is not a question, I should like to point out the importance of Connolly Barracks.

I appreciate its importance, I know that part of the country well.

Is it the Minister's intention to continue the use of historical names such as "Griffith" and "Collins" in the event of closure?

Of course. It is very important to carry on the names which are honoured in our history, especially in connection with the Defence Forces.
