Vol. 394 No. 2

Written Answers. - Switzer Group Deal.

78.

asked the Minister for Labour if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the Switzer Group will be dispensing with the services of about 1,000 employees before the Christmas holidays, as a result of an almost immediate deal; if this will also result in a further spin-off of unemployment from various sources of their suppliers; if any indication has been made to him on this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have not received any notification of the lay off of workers by the Switzer Group under the Protection of Employment Act, 1977 or the Redundancy Employment Acts, 1967 to 1984.

Under the Protection of Employment Act employers are obliged to give me and the trade union or staff association representatives at least 30 days advance notice of collective redundancies. Any notification regarding collective redundancies in the Switzer Group will be examined by my Department in accordance with the provisions of the Act.

My understanding of the position is that the future of the Switzer Group is at present the subject of discussions between the relevant interested parties including the trades unions.
