Vol. 394 No. 4

Written Answers. - Motor Taxation.

189.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has considered the advantages to the motoring public of authorising selected post offices in each county to renew motor taxation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

At present, I am considering the following aspects relating to the collection of motor tax: the adequacy of existing arrangements for renewing tax; the scope and cost of improving the existing system; and the effectiveness and cost of alternative arrangements. Pending completion of this examination, proposals for the provision of additional motor tax renewal outlets, including post offices, are being deferred.

In the meantime, motorists who find it inconvenient to go to their local motor tax office have the option of renewing tax, post free. Since 1987, the vehicle registration unit of my Department computer issues forms reminding vehicle owners to renew motor tax about two weeks in advance of the expiry of existing tax discs. The reminder notice can be used as a tax renewal form and it contains preprinted details of the vehicle, including the appropriate quarterly, half-yearly and annual rate of tax. The form is accompanied by a post-paid reply envelope, addressed to the local motor tax office.
