Vol. 394 No. 4

Written Answers. - Dublin Corporation Housing.

190.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received a request from Dublin Corporation for approval for the next phase of refurbishment of houses in the Cloverhill Estate, Cherry Orchard, Bally-fermot, Dublin 10; the number of houses which will be refurbished during 1990; the amount of funds he will make available to Dublin Corporation for that purpose; whether a target date has been set by his Department for the completion of the refurbishment of that estate in view of the need for advance planning; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A request from the corporation for approval to a further phase of the refurbishment programme for this estate is being examined and a decision in the matter will issue shortly. The 1990 allocations for the remedial works scheme are at present being considered and will be notified to local authorities as soon as possible. The actual level of funding that can be provided each year for individual projects is dependent on the amount of capital available, the competing demands for assistance from authorities, and the priorities accorded by the corporation to their various projects. It is not possible, therefore, to give an indication of the likely timescale for completion of work in the Cloverhill estate.

191.

asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the prolonged dilapidation of urban blight caused on the northside of James's Street, Dublin 8 and the delay in confirming the compulsory purchase order by Dublin Corporation for the purposes of new house building, he will give approval for the Compulsory Purchase Order.

A compulsory purchase order for the area to which the Deputy refers has not been submitted to my Department by Dublin Corporation.

192.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his approval has been sought for the finalisation of phase 2 of the Compulsory Purchase Order on the site at Turvey Avenue/ Emmet Road, Inchicore, Dublin 8 for the purposes of house building by Dublin Corporation; if he will approve the Compulsory Purchase Order; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Emmet Road/Turvey Avenue Area Compulsory Purchase (Housing and Open Space) Order, 1985, was confirmed subject to modification on 14 July 1987. The administration of the order is a matter for the local authority.

193.

asked the Minister for the Environment if Dublin Corporation has sought his approval for the expenditure of approximately £2 million for the refurbishment of St. Michael's Estate, Inchicore, Dublin 8; if, in view of very serious dilapidation and very serious social problems in the area, he will give his consent for such a programme to take place during 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The management and maintenance of their dwellings is a matter for local authorities. Financial assistance is available to them from the Department for the carrying out of certain refurbishment works to estates.

While it is understood that the corporation are considering the refurbishment of this estate, proposals have not been received in the Department.
