asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the extremely dangerous condition of the road from Ballindrait to where it joins the Lifford/Letterkenny road, County Donegal; to the fact that the cost of widening the road and removing dangerous bends is beyond the financial ability of Donegal County Council; and if he will make a special grant available to the Council to have the work carried out.

The condition of public roads in their administrative area is primarily a matter for Donegal County Council. As the road in question is a non-national road, responsibility for undertaking any works on it, including the provision of the necessary finance, is a matter for the local authority. The local authority may, at their discretion, use the discretionary grants for non-national roads, paid by my Department, to supplement expenditure from its own resources on such work. On 23 November 1989 discretionary grants for regional and county roads, totalling £4.132 million, were notified to Donegal County Council in respect of 1990.
