asked the Minister for the Environment when it is planned to proceed with the planned by-passes on the Sligo-Dublin road at (1) Ballisodare and (2) Collooney; when it is intended that work will commence; and when it is envisaged that the work will be completed.

An operational programme for roads and other transport infrastructure is being prepared in accordance with the Community Support Framework recently adopted by the EC Commission. A draft of the programme has been submitted to the Commission. Pending completion of the programme, it is not proposed to indicate the major schemes to be undertaken in the period up to 1993.

asked the Minister for the Environment the plans he has to improve the Sligo-Dublin road at the Curlews; if these plans involve the construction of a by-pass; if so, the line this by-pass will follow; the length of the by-pass; the cost; the amount of money that will be recovered from the EC Structural Funds; when it is planned to commence work; and the length of time the project will take.

Proposals for a major road scheme on the national primary route at this location, at an approximate cost of £13 million, were included in the Operational Programme for Road Development 1989 to 1993 which was submitted to the EC Commission on 30 March, 1989. Outline proposals for the scheme, including its alignment, are currently being developed by the local authority, Roscommon County Council.

Under the Community Support Framework, improvement works on the national primary routes to be included in the programme may qualify for assistance from the European Regional Development Fund at the maximum rate of 75 per cent.
