Vol. 394 No. 4

Written Answers. - Cork City Public Lighting.

216.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make funds available to provide additional public lighting for Cork city.

The full cost of approved schemes for the provision or improvement of traffic route lighting on national routes in built-up areas may be charged against State road grants. Proposals for a scheme of lighting in respect of a section of the Southern Ring Road scheme have been received in my Department from Cork Corporation. These proposals are currently under examination in the Department and, if approved, would qualify for State road grant assistance.

The provision or improvement of public lighting on other roads is a matter for the local authority. The cost involved would fall to be met from the local authority's own resources supplemented by the discretionary road grants notified annually by the Department.
