Vol. 394 No. 4

Written Answers. - Limerick Ambulance Service.

240.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to the fact that an ambulance which was based at the Regional Maternity Hospital, Limerick and which serviced the north side of the city will in future be based at the Regional Hospital, Dooradoyle; that this will significantly increase the call response time interval for ambulance service in the north city; if he will intervene to maintain the status quo; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The provision of ambulance services in the Limerick area is a matter for the Mid-Western Health Board in the first instance.

I understand that the decision to relocate the ambulance at the Central Ambulance Station was taken following consideration by the board of the change in pattern of traffic flows in the city since the opening of the new Shannon Bridge and in the context of the total number of calls answered by the service generally. In considering these factors the board is satisfied that the best possible service can be provided by locating all ambulance services at the Regional Ambulance Centre.

However, ambulances could be located at the Regional Maternity Hospital if circumstances so require.

The situation will be monitored closely to ensure that there will be no reduction in the level of service provided following the relocation.
