Vol. 394 No. 4

Written Answers. - Free Books Scheme.

247.

asked the Minister for Education, in respect of the free books scheme at (i) primary and (ii) post-primary level, (a) whether all pupils in a school, irrespective of age, may benefit from the scheme, (b) the maximum payment per child currently recommended by her Department and (c) her plans for the development of these schemes.

In relation to primary level, pupils in standards I to VI, irrespective of age are eligible to be considered for assistance under the scheme. There is no age requirement for eligibility in post-primary schools. There is no maximum payment per pupils. The principal teachers, who administer the scheme decide, subject to the overall amount of money made available to them, the assistance to be given in each case.

In 1989 the allocation for free books was substantially increased and a further increase is being granted in 1990.
