Vol. 394 No. 4

Written Answers. - Coolock (Dublin) Community Law Centre.

45.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the existing workload in Coolock Community Law Centre, Dublin 5 warrants an extra solicitor; and whether he has considered this in formulating proposals for permanent funding of the centre.

Following recent discussions which I had with representatives of Coolock Community Law Centre, I have made arrangements with the Combat Poverty Agency to provide an annual grant of £70,000 to the centre for each of the next three years.

The level of funding provided to the centre has to be determined in the light of existing budgetary constraints and the many demands made on the Exchequer for funding.

The grant of £70,000 to be made to the centre in 1990 represents an increase of £10,000 or almost 17 per cent over the 1989 grant and £20,000 or 40 per cent over the grant made to the centre in 1986, increases which are considerably in excess of the rates of inflation. In these circumstances, the 1990 grant of £70,000 must be regarded as reasonable.
