Vol. 394 No. 4

Written Answers. - Local Elections.

53.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will take the necessary steps to ensure that candidates for the local elections in June 1990 who are in receipt of unemployment assistance or unemployment benefit will not be denied payment because they are candidates; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Claimants for unemployment assistance and benefit are required to satisfy the statutory conditions of being available for and genuinely seeking work. In the normal way candidates for elections who are in receipt of unemployment payments should have no difficulty in satisfying my Department's deciding officers that they fulfil these conditions and there is accordingly no need for any special steps to be taken in respect of candidates for next year's local elections.
