asked the Minister for Justice the number of reported crimes committed in Cork city and county for each year since 1987, the number of (a) robberies and (b) other crimes during the period in question; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Written Answers. - Cork Crime Statistics.
The information requested by the Deputy is given in a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.
The level of recorded indictable crime for County Cork for 1988 indicates a slight decrease over the figures for 1987. The figures for recorded indictable crime for Cork city for 1988 showed an increase of 3.4 per cent over the figures for 1987. I am informed by the Garda authorities that provisional figures for Cork city and county for the first ten months of this year indicate a significant decrease in the level of recorded indictable crime by comparison with the corresponding period in 1988.
I am satisfied that the Garda authorities keep the crime problem in Cork, as elsewhere, under continuing review and can be relied on to continue to do their utmost to tackle the crime situation generally and to take all appropriate measures to deal with any particular crime problems that arise. In reply to Priority Question No. 52 on 9 November last I outlined a series of new measures that are being taken to tackle crime generally and on 16 November I announced a package of initiatives involving the commitment of substantial additional resources for this purpose.
