Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 13 Dec 1989

Vol. 394 No. 5

Written Answers. - Long-Term Prisoners.

40.

asked the Minister for Justice when he expects to receive a report from the commission recently appointed to examine long-term prison sentences; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Sentence Review Group, the establishment of which I announced in the course of a Dáil debate on 1 December, has the task of advising me, on an ongoing basis, in relation to the administration of prison sentences in individual cases where offenders are serving long term sentences, including life sentences but excluding sentences for capital murder. My expectation is that the group should shortly be in a position to begin making recommendations to me on the individual cases which they will be reviewing.
