Vol. 394 No. 5

Written Answers. - Female Prisoners.

41.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of female prisoners at present in (a) Mountjoy (b) Limerick and (c) Portlaoise prisons; their ages and prison sentences; if they have access to a training unit; if they will be transferred to the new prison in Clondalkin or other modernised accommodation; and, if so, when.

There are 43 female prisoners in Mountjoy Women's Prison at present and this is the only institution used to accommodate female prisoners. I propose to circulate details of their ages and sentences in the form of a tabular statement in the Official Report.

The women do not attend a separate training unit but are provided with educational facilities. Among the courses available are crafts, yoga, word processing, cookery, drama, photography and literacy. There are also work facilities available including laundry work, knitting and towel making.

It is not proposed to transfer the female offenders to the new place of detention at Wheatfield, Clondalkin. However, I recently announced plans for the refurbishment of the women's prison at Mountjoy.

Details of ages and sentences of female prisoners.
