Vol. 394 No. 5

Written Answers. - Funds to Combat Poverty.

91.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he has any plans to fund (a) the projects from the second EC Poverty Programme whose funding is coming to an end this month (b) the establishment of a national scheme for funding the many other worthwhile community development projects in deprived communities; and if he has any plans to support those integrated projects which were approved by the Combat Poverty Agency but were not successful in finding European funds.

I am considering at present, in conjunction with the Combat Poverty Agency, the question of resourcing those aspects of the work of projects which participated in the Second European Programme to Combat Poverty which merit continued funding. The projects to be included in the third EC Programme have not yet been selected by the EC Commission. As soon as the selection is known the possibility of support for projects which are not being funded under the programme will also be considered in conjunction with the agency.

The Combat Poverty Agency has as one of its functions the provision of support for community development projects. The question of providing additional resources for this purpose is a matter for consideration in the context of the budget.
