Bernard Allen

Question:

129 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Finance if he will make a statement in relation to Phase 2 of the Government's decentralisation programme, centre by centre, which will involve the relocation of 2,000 civil servants.

The position regarding Phase 2 of the Government's decentralisation scheme is as follows:

(a) Phase II (Tranche I)

This provides for decentralisation to three provincial centres as follows:

Both Lettkerkenny and Killarney should be ready for occupation by autumn 1990. In the case of Athlone, the firms who submitted tender proposals originally were recently asked to provide revised costings and these are being considered at present. It is intended to place a contract shortly.

Tenders have been received for the construction of new offices at Ennis and Nenagh and these are at present being examined. Work on these two centres should commence by April 1990.
In relation to Limerick, proposals to relocate the staff in an existing office building are under consideration at present.
(c) Phase III (Tranche III)
This comprises the following centres: Waterford and Dundalk.
No decision has been taken as yet regarding what Departments are to be decentralised to the above centres.
