Phil Hogan

Question:

172 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the amount of cereals and proteins for animal feed imported into Ireland for each year from 1987 to 1989 inclusive; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The quantities of cereals and proteins for use in animal feed imported into Ireland for the years 1987 and 1988 and for the period 1 January — 30 September 1989 are as follows:

1987

1988

1989

1 January-30 September

Cereals*

88,000 tonnes

81,000 tonnes

66,000 tonnes

Proteins

360,500 tonnes

436,500 tonnes

318,000 tonnes

*As customs tariff classifications do not distinguish between milling wheat and feed wheat the figure for imported cereals used in the manufacture of animal feedingstuffs are Department estimates.
