Question:

235 Mr. J. Mitchell and Mr. Noonan(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Labour the total number of redundancies notified to his Department for each month of 1989 or for each of the last 12 months for which estimates have been made.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 234 and 235 together.

The numbers of proposed redundancies notified to my Department under the Redundancy Payments Acts for the year 1989, broken down for each month, were as follows:—

1989

The foregoing figures relate to notifications of proposed redundancies received in my Department during the year, not to actual redundancies. An examination carried out by my Department in respect of the three year period from 1985 to 1988 showed that approximately 7 per cent of notifications of proposed redundancies are not subsequently implemented. On this basis, the number of actual redundancies qualified under the Redundancy Payments Acts during 1989 would be approximately 12,460.
I do not have any information in respect of non-notifiable redundancies i.e. those who do not come within the scope of the Redundancy Payments Acts.
