Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - County Tipperary Afforestation.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

241 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Energy the total acreage planted in trees to date; the localities planted in Tipperary North and South Riding; and the amount of this acreage which was not heather-bearing prior to afforestation in terms of upland hill or lowland bog.

The total area under forest on 31 December 1989 was 1,048,335 acres, of which approximately 75,000 acres were in County Tipperary.

Details of location and vegetation cover for public afforestation in County Tipperary are an operational matter for Coillte Teoranta. There are approximately 7,500 acres of private forests in the county. However, details on the localities planted and the vegetation cover prior to planting are neither comprehensive nor readily available.
