Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - Traffic Route Lighting.

Michael Creed

Question:

316 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the criteria laid down by his Department in relation to traffic data for applicants for traffic route lighting on national primary routes.

There are no general criteria, in relation to traffic accident data, laid down by my Department for the provision of traffic route lighting on national primary routes. Each application, by a local authority, for the provision of traffic route lighting is assessed, by the Department, on its merits. The main factors taken into account are:

(1) whether there is a night-time accident situation at the location in question, and
(2) whether the accident pattern is one in which the provision of public lighting is liable to reduce accidents significantly.
In general, traffic route lighting is confined to urban areas.
