Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - Role and Responsibilities of Parents.

John Bruton

Question:

427 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education if she or her predecessors have issued any circular on the general role and responsibilities of parents in regard to the schools attended by their children; and if she will outline the contents of same.

In regard to primary schools no circular has been issued specifically on this subject. However, reference to parental involvement in the operation of boards of management is made in the handbook "Boards of Management of National Schools: Constitutions of Boards and Rules of Procedure". Circular 7/88 issued by my Department on discipline in national schools contains a section which deals with parent-school relations regarding school discipline.

In regard to post-primary schools I have not issued any circular on this matter nor am I aware of any such circular issued by my predecessors.

I should say, however, that the establishment of the National Parents' Council had as one of its aims the promotion of effective participation by parents in education locally at the level of each individual schools.
