Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - Allocations for Teaching Languages.

Frank Crowley

Question:

437 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Education when information regarding the amount of money allocated to the teaching of (a) Irish (b) English (c) German (d) Spanish and (e) French in each school for the past five years will be made available, having regard to her reply to Parliamentary Question No. 274 of 12 December 1989.

As stated in my reply to the Deputy's question of 12 December 1989 the information sought by the Deputy is not readily available in my Department.

As, for the most part, money is not allocated specifically for the teaching of individual languages, the information sought could be obtained only through a detailed study which would seek to apportion general expenditures across a range of subject heads. I do not consider that the time and expense involved would be justified.
