Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - Transport Costs.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

466 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport, in view of the increased cost of transport as a result of price rises in diesel, if, in conjunction with other Government Departments, he has any plans to remedy the situation which will have an effect on the consumer price index; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I note that a similar question has been addressed to my colleague, the Minister for Industry and Commerce, who has overall responsibility for price controls, including the setting of diesel prices.

In so far as my Department is concerned, we have no plans to offset effects of increased diesel fuel prices. These are but one of many input costs, determined by developments in the international and national economies, which must be borne by the transport sector.
