Question:47 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Health the total number of staff employed in health boards and voluntary hospitals at (a) the end of 1989 and (b) the end of 1986.

The results of the 1989 Health Services Personnel Census are not yet available but it is estimated that approximately 52,000 whole-time equivalent staff were employed in health boards, joint board and public voluntary hospitals at the end of 1989. The corresponding census figure for 1986 was 56,430.
