Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - Migration Estimates.

Michael Noonan

Question:

108 Mr. Noonan (Limerick East) asked the Taoiseach the net and gross emigration for each year from 1980 to 1989 inclusive.

In the absence of comprehensive documentary or other administrative procedures relating to the movement of persons into and out of the State, migration estimates are made annually using current population estimates and data on births and deaths. These migration estimates are for the net balance between inward and outward flows in the 12 month period to mid-April each year. Corresponding estimates for gross inward and outward flows are not available.

The following table gives the annual net migration estimates since 1980.

Year to mid-April

Estimated Net Migration (- = outward flow)

1980

- 8,000

1981

2,000

1982

- 1,000

1983

- 14,000

1984

- 9,000

1985

- 20,000

1986

- 28,000

1987

- 27,000

1988

- 32,000

1989

- 46,000

The Central Statistics Office has been exploring the possibility of making estimates of gross emigration flows using the Labour Force Surveys. The results have not yet reached the point where they can be relied upon to provide reliable estimates which can be used to compile official gross and net migration estimates.
