Vol. 395 No. 7

Written Answers. - International Co-Operation.

Question:

26 Mr. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will outline his plans under the heading of International Co-operation for 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

An amount of £500,000 has been allocated in the 1990 Estimates to the Vote subhead dealing with international co-operation. The subhead covers contributions to 17 international organisations dealing with agriculture, among them the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations. The FAO, which is concerned with alleviating poverty, malnutrition and hunger in the Third World, is the recipient of 74 per cent — £369,000 — of the total amount allocated under the subhead. The other organisations to which my Department are affiliated are concerned with on-going research and development in the field of veterinary science, plant genetic resources and agricultural production projects.
