Vol. 395 No. 7

Written Answers. - Environment Protection.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

64 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to the concentration of pig rearing, breeding and slaughtering units in Counties Kildare and Offaly; to the environmental consequences arising from that concentration; and the steps he intends to take to protect the environment in these areas.

My information is that there is not a concentration of pig rearing, breeding and slaughtering units in Counties Kildare and Offaly. Less than 5 per cent of commercial pig herds in the country are located in these counties.

The local authorities responsible for environmental issues operate strict planning and new environmental impact assessment regulations with regard to proposed new pig units. These regulations came into effect on 1 February 1990.

My Department administers a scheme of grants for pollution control works. This scheme provides generous grants for slurry storage including that for pig production.
