Written Answers. - Petrol Vehicle Emission Pollution.

Question:

97 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Environment the estimated number of (a) petrol using vehicles and (b) diesel fuelled vehicles in the country at present, and if statistics are available on the comparative amount of pollution caused by petrol vehicle emission as against diesel vehicle emission.

In 1988, the latest year for which statistics are available, the total number of licensed vehicles in Ireland was 981,296, of which 760,312 were petrol driven and 216,722 diesel driven.

The following table sets out estimates, prepared by the environmental research unit of my Department of emissions for 1987 based on fuel used:
