Vol. 395 No. 7

Written Answers. - Presentation Convent, Clonmel.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

99 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for the Environment , in view of the dangerous traffic problems at Presentation Convent, Clonmel, County Tipperary, which is attended by approximately 1,000 students, if he will provide the necessary finance and support to Clonmel Corporation to remedy the situation, having regard to the offer by the Presentation Sisters to provide the land required for such improvements free of charge; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Responsibility for the funding of road works at this location rests with Tipperary (SR) County Council. The council may, at its own discretion, deploy funding from within the discretionary grants for regional and county roads allocated by my Department, to meet the cost of works on the road in question.

On 23 November last, I notified county councils generally of their discretionary grants for regional and county roads for 1990. In the case of Tipperary (SR) County Council these grants total £1,832,000. This represents an increase of £436,000, or 31 per cent, compared with the road grant provisions under the equivalent headings in 1989.
