Vol. 395 No. 8

Written Answers. - Control of Fees.

Bernard Allen

Question:

46 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has any proposals to set up a system to control the fees of consultants and solicitors in order to protect the public from the unreasonable increases which are being proposed.

The Fair Trade Commission is currently undertaking a wide-ranging study into the rendering of certain professional and analogous services. To date reports of studies into the accountancy and engineering professions have been published. Reports on the legal profession and on architects, surveyors, auctioneers and estate agents are awaited. When all of these reports are to hand I will then be in a position to take whatever action, including introducing legislation, that is found to be necessary.
