Vol. 395 No. 9

Written Answers. - Bovine TB.

Dick Spring

Question:

138 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he has investigated the possibility of immunising calves shortly after birth, as a possible method of reducing TB in cattle.

The question of immunising calves shortly after birth as a possible method of reducing TB in cattle was investigated by the World Health Organisation's Scientific Committee which concluded that the immunity was short-lived and would be easily overwhelmed by disease challenge.

An added disadvantaged is that it is not possible to distinguish between infected and vaccinated animals.
