Vol. 395 No. 9

Written Answers. - Radioactive Waste Dumping.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

172 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Energy if he will publish all the scientific advice available to him in regard to the dumping of radioactive waste at sea.

The most important sources of advice on sea dumping are the reports already published by the Nuclear Energy Agency of the OECD and by the International Maritime Organisation on behalf of the London Dumping Convention. Additional extensive reports are published by the IAEA and by concerned countries. Many of these reports are available for inspection at the library of the Nuclear Energy Board and others can be obtained on request.

Dumping of high-level radioactive waste at sea is banned under the London Dumping Convention, and dumping of other radioactive waste has been prohibited since 1983 under a moratorium agreed by the contracting parties to the Convention.
