Vol. 395 No. 9

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Benefits.

Jim Higgins

Question:

187 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reason for the delay in nominating a date for the oral appeal in respect of the unemployment assistance claim of a person (details supplied) in County Mayo.

Following investigation, a deciding officer assessed the means of the person concerned at £70.72 per week from 11 October 1989. The means are derived from the net yearly value of his holding and from capital. This assessment leaves him entitled to payment of unemployment assistance at the weekly rate of £5.20.

He appealed against this decision. Following an examination of the papers an appeals officer decided to hold an oral hearing of the appeal to afford the claimant an opportunity of presenting his case personally. However, due to the volume of appeals cases on hands at present it has not yet been possible to fix a date for the hearing of his case. A date will be set as soon as possible and the claimant will then be informed of the arrangements for the hearing.
