Vol. 395 No. 9

Written Answers. - Rape Prosecutions.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

215 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Justice the number of prosecutions for rape in each Garda district for the years (a) 1987, (b) 1988 and (c) 1989; the verdicts in each case; and the composition, by sex, of the juries in each of these cases.

The statistics sought by the Deputy in relation to proceedings commenced in rape cases and convictions are available in relation to Garda divisions but not districts. It is possible that a conviction obtained in one year may relate to a prosecution commenced in a previous year. The statistics are given in attached tabular statement.

Information in relation to individual verdicts and composition of juries is not readily available and could not be compiled without an inordinate expenditure of scarce resources.

Number of rape cases in which proceedings were commenced and the number of convictions.
