Vol. 395 No. 9

Written Answers. - Criminal Insanity.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

218 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice, in light of the recent High Court judgment that decisions on the release of persons found guilty of crimes but insane were an executive rather than a judicial function and the statement of the trial judge that the laws on criminal insanity should be examined by the Oireachtas as a matter of extreme urgency, the steps he is taking by way of response to the decision; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The recent judgment of the High Court in the case referred to is being examined in my Department. Any proposals which I may have as a result of that examination will be announced in the normal way in due course.
