Vol. 395 No. 9

Written Answers. - Service with British Department.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

233 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for the Environment if, in view of the substantial number of both professional and other employees currently employed in the health service in the Republic, who had varied periods of service with the British Department of Health and Social Security, he will investigate the possibility of having such service credited for superannuation purposes.

There are no provisions in the local government pension schemes for the transfer of service given with organisations outside the State (other than service with EC institutions, in respect of which reciprocal transfer arrangements have been effective since 1973)

However, as far as the position of certain staff employed by bodies, including health boards, to which the local government superannuation arrangements apply who may have had previous service in the British public sector is concerned, my Department would be prepared on application from the local authority or health board concerned to examine the possibility of allowing some credit for service in the British public sector in any case where the British public sector organisations concerned agree to make a contribution in respect of service with them.
