Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Michael Collins' Birth Centenary.

Godfrey Timmins

Question:

2 Mr. Timmins and Mr. Deasy asked the Taoiseach the ceremonies which are being organised to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the late General Michael Collins.

On 21 June next a stamp commemorating the centenary of the birth of General Michael Collins will be issued as part of the Statesmen of Ireland series.

There are no plans for a specific ceremony to commemorate the centenary of the birth of General Collins. Following the recommendations of the all-party Oireachtas committee which was set up to consider the question of holding a single National Day of Commemoration, the Government decided in 1986 that a National Day of Commemoration would be held on the Sunday nearest 11 July each year to honour all those Irishmen and Irishwomen who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations.

As General Collins was the President of the Provisional Government will the Taoiseach agree that there should be some special ceremony to honour his memory? I understand that the date in question is 17 October 1990.

Yes, he was also the first Commander-in-Chief of the Army.
