Vol. 395 No. 9

Written Answers. - Public Holidays.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

36 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Labour if he has any plans to increase the number of public holidays in Ireland in 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have no plans to increase the number of public holidays this year. I have to bear in mind the present economic climate, and especially the Government's priorities in relation to preserving existing jobs and creating new ones. As additional public holidays would generate additional employment costs, it would not be appropriate to declare extra holidays at this time.
