Question:

49 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Labour the number of women on the boards of agencies and companies under his control at the end of 1989; the plans he has to increase that number in 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

When seeking nominations for the boards of organisations under my control from employer, trade union and other organisations, I emphasise the necessity of having adequate representation of both sexes thereon, and should board vacancies occur in 1990 these bodies would be again made aware of my policy in this regard.

The total number of women on the boards of such organisations at the end of 1989 was 34 as follows:
