Vol. 396 No. 3

Written Answers. - Fishery Harbour Development.

Enda Kenny

Question:

113 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for the Marine the finance allocated for 1990 to provide pier and slipway construction around our coasts; the locations and allocations, if any, already selected; the allocation which is being made for County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There is provision of £4.5 million in my Department's Vote for the development of harbours for fishery purposes. This will be used for developments at the fishery harbour centres and for making grants to county councils in respect of fishery harbour projects. My Department is currently updating its five year fishery harbour development programme and has sought proposals from local authorities for projects at harbours and piers which they consider would be justified in the fishery interest.

Pending the finalisation of this programme, it would be premature to list all the locations which will be in the programme or to say what allocations will be made available to different counties. I can say, however, that the principal expenditure this year will be concentrated on projects under way at Rossaveal, County Galway, Dingle, County Kerry and Greencastle, County Donegal.

The provision of a new pier at Inishbofin, County Galway, as approved by the Central Development Committee of the Department of Finance, is also being undertaken by my Department.
My Department will also grant aid to commercial harbours to the extent of approximately £500,000 in 1990.
